We are creating our own garbage patch in New York City that will inspire people take a stand for the earth. We will build a dramatic art installation powerful enough to attract mainstream coverage. We will give handouts and information on the real impact of our plastic culture. We will offer a new course of action that everyone can take. This event will raise money to clean up all the Garbage Patches of the world.
We will build a plastic ocean in New York City.
- One public playground will be chosen to host New York City’s Plastic Ocean.
- A portion of the playground will be temporarily sectioned off with a high fence.
- Children will create cut-outs of fish, birds and marine mammals and fasten them to the fence.
- The families and residents of the surrounding communities will bring their rinsed out, cleaned plastic and throw it into the fenced-in area.
- This enclosure and the plastic in it will symbolize the ocean and what our future would look like if no action were to be taken.
The entire city will watch the pile of plastic grow as more and more people stop by to throw in their plastic, make a statement and learn how they can alter their behavior. The Plastic Ocean will be taken down when it is completely filled up with plastic.
